GC Continuing Education offers classroom-based and remote-learning courses specifically designed to meet the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors requirement that all NC General contractors complete 8 hours of CE in order to renew a license.

2020 Approved Course List

The NC Licensing Board for General Contractors approves instructors, course locations, and coursework for each calendar year.

General Statute 87-10.2 states that North Carolina licensed general contractors will be required to complete continuing education (CE) beginning with 2021 license renewals. The 8-hour course requirement includes a mandatory 2-hour course produced by the Board with information about changes in the laws and rules and other content applicable to general contracting.

Introduction to Solar for Residential and Commercial (4 credit hrs)

With solar energy now common in both residential and commercial buildings, this 4 Hour class provides General Contractors with a base knowledge of solar energy to help them navigate potential projects and cusotmers considering solar energy as part of either new build or a retrofit. NCLBGC ID: 0202

Solar Components Consideration (2 credit hrs)

This class deeps dives into the 3 major components of a solar installation to provide knowledge related to considerations in regards to product selection and integration. The four components covered are solar panels, inverters, racking and energy storage.
This is a 2 hour, level 2 course for those with some familiarity with solar or who have taken the introduction to solar for commercial and residential. NCLBGC ID: 0217

When must I complete the continuing education requirement?

Continuing education classes will be offered until November 30, 2020. Providers are not allowed to offer CE classes during the month of December.

When and how do I renew my license for 2021?

All North Carolina general contractor licenses expire on December 31st of each year. Licenses can be renewed by filing an application for renewal with the NC Licensing Board.

General Statute 87-10.2 states that North Carolina licensed general contractors will be required to complete continuing education (CE) beginning with 2021 license renewals.

  • CE courses begin in May 2020.
  • 8 hours of CE must be completed in order to renew a license by at least one qualifier for licensees in the license classifications of Building, Residential and Unclassified. For the Unclassified license, it shall be the qualifier who has passed the Building examination.
  • The 8-hour course requirement includes a mandatory 2-hour course produced by the Board with information about changes in the laws and rules and other content applicable to general contracting.
  • The remaining 6 hours will be elective courses produced by outside providers, submitted to and approved by the Board.
  • The CE year begins January 1 and ends on November 30 annually.
  • Classes will not be offered during the month of December.
